EN 397:2025 – the new industrial helmet standard: what changes and how to prepare
The new standard for industrial protective helmets, EN 397:2025, has been listed among the harmonised standards since 16 June 2026; the 2012 edition gives presumption of conformity until 16 December 2027. Two helmet types, new and withdrawn tests, new markings and a longer set of instructions: here is what changes and what manufacturers and distributors need to do before the transition ends.

Ten market surveillance authorities from eight countries tested 65 industrial safety helmets against EN 397. In the laboratory 19 helmets (29%) failed – most of them in shock absorption – and the checks of markings and documentation found deficiencies in 41 (63%). Taken together, 46 helmets (71%) failed at least one requirement and 19 (29%) were in order in every respect. What does this mean for manufacturers, employers and wearers?
